Every relationship brings together two individuals with their own ways of functioning, belief systems, expectations, and communication patterns. When those characteristics do not align easily, tension and conflict can develop.
Our goal is to help couples build healthier communication, rebuild trust, and strengthen emotional connection.
What to Expect in Couples Counseling
Mental Health MedicaIn couples counseling, we work with both individuals to:
- Practice active listening
- Develop mindfulness within communication
- Learn assertiveness skills
- Rebuild trust and intimacy
- Explore attachment patterns
- Identify unhealthy relationship cycles
We do not assign blame or position one partner as the problem. Instead, we focus on understanding patterns that have developed and helping both individuals identify areas for growth.
There are times when one or both individuals would benefit from individual counseling in addition to couples therapy. We encourage this when appropriate. Individual work does not replace couples counseling and may continue alongside it. Clear boundaries are maintained for all involved to support continued forward progress.

When Only One Partner Is Willing to Attend
It is common for one partner to reach out for counseling while the other is hesitant or unwilling to attend.
We strongly encourage individuals to begin counseling even if their partner chooses not to participate. There are meaningful changes you can make on your own that improve how you function within the relationship. Often, when one partner begins making healthy changes, the dynamic of the relationship begins to shift as well.
Sometimes the other partner eventually joins counseling. Other times they do not. Either way, investing in your own growth can lead to healthier outcomes.
Marriage and Couples Counseling
No two people are completely compatible in every way. Differences in needs, expectations, and communication styles can sometimes lead to serious conflict.
Marriage counseling is one of the most common forms of couples therapy we provide. It is not uncommon for couples to drift apart over time. As people grow and change, it may become difficult for their partner to adapt or accept those changes.
At Braden Counseling Center, our experienced counselors listen carefully to how the relationship has evolved and offer practical strategies to help you reconnect. We are committed to helping both individuals identify what they can improve to begin rebuilding the connection that first brought you together.
Whether through couples therapy, individual therapy, or both, we maintain professional boundaries and focus on helping you move toward a brighter tomorrow.

Domestic Violence Counseling
Braden Counseling Center also specializes in domestic violence counseling.
Domestic violence can present in many forms, including:
- Physical abuse
- Repeated name-calling
- Isolation
- Intimidation
- Sexual abuse
- Controlling or dominating behaviors
It may occur frequently, occasionally, or even as a single serious incident. Regardless of the pattern, it is a complex and learned behavior that must be addressed.
Each team member who treats domestic violence has completed:
- 40 hours of domestic violence training
- 20 hours of Partner Abuse Intervention Program (P.A.I.P.) facilitator training
- Court-approved certification
Our approach focuses on accountability, behavior change, communication skills, and long-term safety.
Counseling Services for Divorcing Couples with Children
Sometimes relationships end despite best efforts, and divorce becomes the healthiest option. When children are involved, the process becomes more complex.
In these situations, custody evaluations may be necessary to determine the most stable and supportive living arrangements for children. At Braden Counseling Center, we consider:
- The child’s age
- Developmental level
- Emotional needs
- Overall stability
We approach evaluations without assumptions and provide honest, unbiased recommendations.
Additionally, we help parents learn how to successfully co-parent after separation. Children need structure, discipline, emotional support, and room to grow. We guide parents in providing these needs while navigating the challenges of parenting separately.

Substance Abuse Counseling for Couples
Substance abuse can significantly impact relationships. When one or both partners struggle with addiction, trust, communication, and stability often suffer.
Braden Counseling provides substance abuse counseling designed to address addiction while supporting your roles as partners and parents. Our counselors are highly trained, knowledgeable, and certified by the State of Illinois.
Through open communication and structured treatment planning, we help couples:
- Address addiction patterns
- Develop healthier coping mechanisms
- Restore trust and accountability
- Support long-term recovery
Alcohol-Related Counseling Services
Alcohol dependency can be just as disruptive as illicit drug use. It is not uncommon for one or both members of a relationship to struggle with alcohol use.
Our alcohol treatment program is similar to our substance abuse counseling program, with a focus on:
- Honest self-reflection
- Accountability
- Coping skills development
- Reducing urges and triggers
- Rebuilding trust within the relationship
Recovery requires honesty with both the counselor and yourself. We provide a safe and structured environment to support that process.
Trauma and PTSD Counseling Services
Trauma can affect not only the individual who experienced it but also their partner and the overall relationship dynamic.
Our trauma-informed therapy approach emphasizes listening, understanding, and empathy. We treat clients as individuals with unique experiences, not as statistics.
Rather than focusing on what is wrong with someone, we focus on what has happened to them. Trauma-focused therapy provides a safe and therapeutic environment where healing can begin.
Our experienced trauma counselors build rapport and develop personalized treatment strategies to support long-term recovery and improved relationship functioning.
Our Commitment to Couples and Families
Couples counseling can be challenging, but it can also restore connection and prevent further damage. Healthy relationships require growth, communication, and mutual understanding.
We are committed to helping couples grow both individually and together. Whether your goal is rebuilding your relationship, improving communication, navigating divorce, or addressing addiction or trauma, we are here to help.
