Anger is a powerful emotion, but it is rarely the only emotion involved.

At Braden Counseling Center, our C.A.L.M. Program is designed to help individuals understand anger, address its root causes, and develop healthier ways to respond to life’s challenges.

Understanding Anger

Anger is often one of the few emotions people feel comfortable expressing. Many individuals were never taught how to recognize or communicate emotions such as fear, sadness, frustration, or disappointment. As a result, anger becomes the emotion that surfaces, even when it is not the true source of distress.

In other cases, anger develops as a response to past experiences or ongoing situations. Sometimes people are aware of what has caused their anger. Other times, the source is less obvious. Regardless of where it comes from, unresolved anger can significantly impact thoughts, decision-making, relationships, and behavior.

Left unaddressed, anger can lead to problems at home, work, and in legal or interpersonal situations.

What Is the C.A.L.M. Program?

The C.A.L.M. Program focuses on long-term change, not quick fixes.

While techniques such as counting to ten or walking away may provide temporary relief, they do not address the underlying patterns that cause anger to resurface. True change requires understanding how anger developed, identifying ineffective coping strategies learned over time, and replacing them with healthier, more effective responses.

The C.A.L.M. Program helps participants examine:

  • How anger has been learned and expressed
  • Triggers that lead to emotional escalation
  • Thought patterns that fuel anger
  • The connection between anger and other emotions
  • Healthier ways to cope and respond under stress

By addressing the root causes, participants can begin to change how they react rather than simply trying to suppress anger.

Who Can Benefit from the C.A.L.M. Program?

The C.A.L.M. Program may be helpful for individuals who:

  • Struggle with frequent or intense anger
  • Experience conflict in relationships due to anger
  • Feel easily overwhelmed or reactive
  • Have difficulty expressing emotions in healthy ways
  • Have been referred by the court or another agency
  • Want to improve emotional regulation and communication skills

This program is designed to be supportive, educational, and practical, helping participants gain insight and tools they can use in daily life.

Program Structure & Format

The C.A.L.M. Program is offered in both group and individual formats, allowing participants to choose the option that best fits their needs.

Group Format

  • Eight weekly group sessions
  • Each session is 2½ hours in length
  • Followed by a three-month aftercare program

The group setting allows participants to learn from others, gain perspective, and practice skills in a supportive environment.

Individual Format

  • Six weekly one-hour individual sessions
  • Followed by the same three-month aftercare program

Individual sessions provide a more personalized experience for those who prefer one-on-one support.

Aftercare & Continued Support

Both program formats include a three-month aftercare component. Aftercare helps reinforce the skills learned during the program, supports continued progress, and reduces the risk of returning to old patterns.

Long-term change takes time, and aftercare provides accountability and continued guidance during that process.

Our Approach

At Braden Counseling Center, we believe anger is not something to be ignored or judged. It is a signal that something deeper needs attention.

Our counselors work with participants in a respectful, non-judgmental manner to promote insight, responsibility, and lasting change. The goal of the C.A.L.M. Program is not to eliminate anger, but to help individuals understand it, manage it, and respond in healthier ways.
