The Science of Deep TMS (Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) for Depression

Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (Deep TMS) is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic fields to stimulate specific areas of the brain involved in mood, behavior, and cognition. Deep TMS does not require surgery or anesthesia, and allows patients to return to their normal activities immediately after treatment.

Deep TMS, which is most commonly used to treat Major Depressive Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and smoking addiction, is also being studied for conditions like PTSD and anxiety, among other neurological disorders.

Deep TMS uses an electromagnetic coil positioned over the scalp to generate brief magnetic pulses. These pulses pass painlessly through the skull and induce small electrical currents in targeted brain regions. For example, with depression, activity in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is often reduced. Deep TMS stimulates this region along with connected brain networks to improve mood regulation and emotional processing.

A typical Deep TMS treatment session lasts approximately 20 minutes, and is performed while the patient is awake and seated comfortably. No sedation is required, and patients can safely drive themselves home afterward. Most treatment courses involve five sessions per week for approximately 4-6 weeks, with taper sessions as appropriate. Many patients notice improvement in depression symptoms after several weeks, but individual responses vary.

Large clinical trials have demonstrated that Deep TMS can significantly reduce symptoms of depression, particularly in patients who have not responded adequately to antidepressant medications.

Rather than treating symptoms through medications alone, Deep TMS uses magnetic stimulation to promote neuroplasticity and restore healthier patterns of brain activity. For individuals who have not experienced adequate improvement with traditional treatments, Deep TMS offers an evidence-based, well-tolerated option that can lead to meaningful and lasting symptom relief.

Braden Counseling Center is proud to offer Deep TMS treatments to patients in their Sterling and Sycamore offices.
