This eight-week program is followed by a three-month aftercare program. If the individual session format is chosen, there are 6 one-hour weekly sessions followed by the same three-month after-care program.

Smart Recovery® Support Group

This program is now being offered at various Braden Counseling Centers. The program is a science-based addiction recovery support group that teaches participant self-empowering techniques that aid and strengthen the recovery process. The program uses a 4-point approach to:

  1. Build and Maintain Motivation
  2. Cope with Urges
  3. Manage Thoughts, Feelings, and Behaviors
  4. Live a Balanced Life

This program is different than others of its kind, because it advocates choice, offering those who seek recovery a variety of options and the choice to use the ones that work best for them. SMART Recovery® puts the individuals working towards recovery in charge of how best to reach their goals.

Achieving a healthy, balanced lifestyle is the overall goal for individuals participating in the program. Then, people graduate when they are confident that they have left their addictive behavior behind and are now able to operate on their own. Many participants, upon “graduating” volunteer as meeting facilitators or in some other capacity because they want to “pay it forward” and help others to realize the same gains that they have achieved.

Specific SMART Recovery® Tools

There are many tools available through this program:

  1. A Change Plan Worksheet is a chart in which you list your goals, how you will attain them, the ways in which you will overcome obstacles and challenges, etc. The very process of completing a Change Plan Worksheet will clarify both your goals and the roadblocks and challenges you face in order to attain them.
  2. Cost/Benefit Analysis (CBA) is a tool that is especially useful for increasing your motivation to abstain from your addictive behavior.
  3. ABC’s of REBT is a tool from Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, founded by Dr. Albert Ellis, that helps you to identify your irrational beliefs, which lead to poor consequences and replace those beliefs with more constructive ones.
  4. DISARM (Destructive Imagery and Self-talk Awareness and Refusal Method) is a tool that helps you to expose the thoughts and images which urge you to pursue your addiction. The tool exposes the various unproductive thoughts and images along with the inaccuracies, excuses and rationalizations that keep them alive.
  5. Brainstorming is a technique is often used in face-to-face and online meetings. A participant introduces a question or problem. Other participants then offer ideas and/or suggestions without any judgment involved.
  6. Role-playing/Rehearsing is a tool used mainly in group settings. Examples include rehearsing how to avoid addictive behavior at social events like a wedding or other high-risk event. Participants work with group members playing various roles and “rehearsing” a new script for difficult events.

Braden Counseling Centers offer all of the above in customized plans that help clients on their road to recovery, then keep them on that road.

DUI Counseling Services

If you have been arrested for a DUI, we can help you through the process of dealing with the consequences of a bad choice, as we provide all levels of DUI treatment at all our office locations, including Geneva.

The State of Illinois requires a DUI evaluation be completed before a DUI case can be closed. Our counseling service centers will work with you and if needed can complete a DUI evaluation in one day if you have all the necessary documents required for completion.

DUI Risk Education Program

At our various centers, we offer the mandated Risk Education Program that is determined by your DUI evaluation. The evaluation determines what level of education/care you require to avoid finding yourself with another DUI.

There are four categories of recommended education/treatment that result from an evaluation and determine the number of hours you are required to complete.

Driver’s License Reinstatement Services

At Braden Counseling Center in Geneva, our staff works with you, and with legal experts who understand what is required of you, to have your driving privileges reinstated. This can be a difficult process. We guide you through step-by-step.

We have the forms necessary to request a hearing and can help you with any questions you have about what is required to send with your request. Before your hearing, your treatment must be completed, and you should be finishing your continuing care if it was recommended.

If you were classified as substance-dependent, the Hearing Officer requires documents showing your support network and attesting to 12 months of sobriety. If you are denied, the process begins again.

Our team includes Certified Reciprocal Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CRADC) who specialize in DUI Evaluations, Secretary of State Hearing documents, and Substance Abuse Treatment. These counselors can help you navigate this often difficult, mysterious process so that you can legally drive again.

Braden Counseling Center has an outstanding reputation with the Illinois Secretary of State because we are knowledgeable about what is required of you, and work with you to have everything you need for your hearing.

Individual Counseling Services

At Braden, our philosophy is making “New Ways for Better Days” a reality and provide counseling services to individuals of all ages. If you are interested in individual counseling, the first step is an initial assessment that usually takes from 60 to 90 minutes.

During this session, a counselor takes time to discuss with you the challenges you are facing, as well as what goals you have in mind. Your counselor will also talk with you about your history, in terms of how it may be influencing your current situation, without you even knowing it.

Our counselors use cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing and a strength-based model to identify strengths and build resilience. If you are dealing with depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic medical illness, grief/loss, adjustment disorders brought on by life changes, or other troubling problems, your counselor will work with you and help you to develop self-advocacy within the various systems that you must deal with, so that you can increase self-care and how to accept family/community support if you have not done so in the past.

You will work with your counselor to determine the skills you already have, which ones you need to learn or strengthen, and how to make the necessary adjustments along the way to meet your goals.

At Braden Center Counseling, the goal of individual counseling is to make you self-sufficient.

Couples/Marriage Counseling Services

Couples often consist of two individuals that have their own ways of functioning, their own belief systems, expectations, and communication patterns. Frequently in a couple, some of one partner’s characteristics may not fit well with the other’s.

At Braden Counseling Center, our couples counseling focuses on identifying strengths as well as vulnerabilities within the relationship. We work to help couples to build and practice new skills such as active listening, mindfulness, assertiveness training, building/rebuilding trust/intimacy as well as looking at attachment issues.

Sometimes within the context of marriage counseling, one or both individuals can benefit from working alone with a counselor to address personal issues. When this happens, it does not replace the couples’ therapy but rather augments it.

Understanding boundaries within a relationship is also key. Maintaining boundaries can facilitate forward movement within the relationship.

Sometimes one partner would like couples’ therapy but their partner refuses. If this is the case, come to counseling anyway. If you change, the relationship changes as well. No matter how things work out, those who work to take care of themselves become healthier in the process.

Family Counseling Services

A family is a collection of overlapping relationships, with each individual family member having their own unique characteristics. Often, family members face challenges that result from different views and ideas about how a family should function and what each family member’s role is within the unit. Difficulties can also be caused by a change in family dynamics due to a change in one family member or a change in a specific relationship within the family.

Whatever the cause, many families face challenges at one time or another. Our Geneva family counselors are trained to help family members improve communication among one another. They also have other methods to help family members cope with challenges.

Regardless of the origin of the problem and regardless whether the family considers it an “individual” or “family” issue, our family counselors help families directly participate with one another to find solutions. Our family therapists are skilled at helping families to find their strengths and wisdom, which enables family members to support one another in identifying solutions.

Other Counseling Services We Provide

Substance Abuse Treatment

In addition to DUI services, we provide group counseling that integrates mental health treatment with treatment for substance abuse. Using an integrated approach to treating substance abuse helps our clients to understand and learn skills to manage any mental health issues that are coupled with their substance abuse.

A more holistic approach to an individual’s recovery helps their ability to succeed. Our Elgin substance abuse counselors provide a group which uses cognitive behavioral therapy along with motivational interviewing. Prior to beginning group sessions each client develops an individualized treatment plan which fits their own personal needs so that they can reach their goals in a more realistic manner.

This substance abuse therapy is also helpful for individuals who have completed an inpatient treatment program and want to follow-up that treatment with outpatient counseling. Putting new skills into place and being able to use them consistently is challenging. Aftercare in the form of ongoing, outpatient therapy greatly increases a person’s continued success.

Our Elgin office holds Early Intervention, Substance Abuse & Intensive Outpatient Treatment groups on Tuesdays from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm and Saturdays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Call for an intake appointment to get started on a great program.

What Our Clients are Saying.....

Counseling Services in Rochelle, Illinois

Counseling Services in Rochelle, Illinois

At our Braden Counseling Center in Rochelle, Illinois, our main focus is regular outpatient treatment of substance abuse. We offer programs for women and men, as well as adult and adolescence programs. We also have bilingual evaluators.

Our counselors are here in support of individuals who need ongoing outpatient situation to support their continued recovery or those who are voluntarily looking for help or court mandated to attend a treatment program. In some cases, individuals who cannot, for whatever reason, attend a residential program, engage in an outpatient program.

Outpatient Programs (OP)

Outpatient programs are for individuals seeking help with their alcohol or drug problem and want to stay at home. Our outpatient treatment varies in type and intensity of services offered. It is often a good solution for clients with jobs and social support networks.

Our outpatient programs work well depending on individual patient characteristics and needs, and we find that group sessions have a profoundly positive effect for most of the clients that are with us. Our group sessions capitalize on the social reinforcement offered by peer discussion to help promote alcohol and/or drug-free lifestyles. We also encourage periodic individual counseling to stay connected with our clients and better identify any problems that may cause a relapse.

Treatment Focus for Outpatient Programs

Our outpatient programs use a combination of approaches that include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy– a type of therapy that challenges negative thought patterns about the self and the world to alter unwanted behavior patterns and/or treat mental disorders like depression.
  • Brief Intervention Approach– a technique used to initiate change for an unhealthy or risky behavior like excessive drinking or drug use by challenging the individual’s behavior and its effect on others.
  • Contingency Management Using Motivational Incentivethis gives individuals battling addictions tangible rewards to reinforce positive behaviors like abstinence.
  • Motivational Interviewing– a technique that is non-judgmental and non-confrontational. Its success depends largely on presenting objective feedback based on information provided by the individual attempting to eliminate their addiction.
  • Anger Management Programs– looks at anger as a motivation that is caused by something identifiable, something that can be logically analyzed and refocused.

There is no single treatment option that works for everyone coping with substance abuse, especially if they have a dual diagnosis. The range of mental health disorders is broad, and the relationship between substance abuse and a mental disorder is complicated. This is why our highly trained counselors complete drug and alcohol evaluations to come up with an effective treatment plan, including substance abuse counseling.

C.A.L.M.

Anger is an underlying issue for many types of behaviors. Unfortunately, anger is an emotion that does not often get attention until it is problematic. Because of this, anger is quite often a default emotion we learn as children.  As adults, many of us still express anger rather than a variety of emotions that would help us get to what’s bothering us. When anger is the first response, it impacts our thoughts, decision making, and actions.

At Braden, our C.A.L.M. program is often part of a larger recovery process that focuses on resolving root problems rather than resultant behavior.

With anger, temporary fixes do not work in the long run. To change angry reactions, it is critical to examine how you learned to yell first and think later, if at all.

The program can be done on an individual basis, or individuals can attend a group format. The group program is eight, 2 ½ hour-long, weekly group sessions followed by a three-month aftercare program.

The goal of the program is to stop inappropriate responses to situations that can cause damage to yourself and the people who live with you.
